redukt_ on vuonna 2023 perustettu taiteilija duo, johon kuuluvat teatteriohjaaja Joel Härkönen ja skenografi ja muusikko Veli-Ville Sivén. Redukt_ on nimike, jonka alla voimme toimia työparina, tasa-arvoisina ja toimijuutta jakavina taiteen- ja teatterintekijöinä.

redukt_ is an artist duo founded in 2023, consisting of theater director Joel Härkönen and scenographer and musician Veli-Ville Sivén. redukt_ serves as a platform under which we work as equal partners, sharing agency as artists and theater makers.

Mikä on redukt_duo?
Vuonna 2023 perustettu redukt_ syntyi tarpeesta luoda ennennäkemättömiä esityksiä – yllättäviä, muodoiltaan uusia ja sellaisia, joita itse haluaisimme nähdä. Olemme toimineet työparina vuodesta 2015 ja kehittäneet yhteistä teatterin tekemisen praktiikkaa, jota kutsumme oikeesti tekemiseksi.
Mitä on oikeesti tekeminen?
Oikeesti tekeminen on teatterin tekemisen praktiikka, jossa näyttämöteokseen ja sen esityspaikkaan suhtaudutaan sellaisena kuin se on: oikeesti. Se pyrkii purkamaan perinteisiä teatterin traditioita ja oletuksia – niin tilan kuin tekijyyden osalta.
Metaforana voidaan käyttää ajatusta vesilasista pöydällä. Me emme teeskennele vettä mehuksi tai pöytää aavikoksi, vaan etsimme tapaa kehystää ja kontekstoida lasi niin, että vesilasi pöydällä – sellaisenaan – olisi merkityksellinen.
Teatteri tapahtumana ja paikkana sisältää valtavan määrän oletuksia siitä, miltä esityksen "pitäisi" näyttää tai olla. Punainen esirippu, Näyttelijä pääkallon kanssa ja yleisön tietynlainen tulkinta ovat kaikki osa näitä oletuksia. Myös teatterintekijöiden roolit – ohjaajan, näyttelijän, muusikon – ovat täynnä esioletuksia. Me kysymme sen sijaan: Mitä me oikeesti haluamme tehdä? Mitä meillä on? Mitä tässä tapahtuu ja ketkä sitä tekeävät?
Esityspaikka ja työryhmä
Taiteellisessa prosessissamme esityspaikka ja työryhmä ovat lähtökohta. Kysymme: Missä on näyttämö? Miltä se tuntuu? Millainen on sen ääni, valot, istuimet? Missä yleisö on?
Työryhmässä taas pyrimme löytämään jokaisen oman taiteellisen halun ja roolin: Mikä on unelmani taiteilijana? Mitä se vaatii toteutuakseen? Miten oma roolini työryhmässä muotoutuu?
Oikeesti tekemisellä on eettinen pyrkimys: Kaikki työryhmän jäsenet, mukaan lukien koko henkilökunta, tulisi nähdä yksilöinä ja tunnistaa heidän tapansa osallistua esityksen valmistamiseen niissä puitteissa, joita on tarjolla.
Taiteellinen prosessi
Työskentelymme on prosessikeskeistä, ja koko työryhmä vaikuttaa esityksen sisältöön. Prosessi etenee kolmessa vaiheessa:

Ennakkosuunnittelu – Määritellään esityksen taiteelliset ja tuotannolliset raamit: Onko tekstiä? Millainen lavastus? Kuka kuuluu työryhmään?

Kokeilu – Tutustumme toisiimme ja tilaan, kokeilemme ideoita, leikimme ja inspiroidumme ilman pakkoa tuottaa heti valmista.

Harjoitusvaihe – Sitoudumme löydettyihin materiaaleihin ja työstämme niistä lopullisen esityksen.
Meidän teatterimme, taiteemme on ajattelua, kokeilua, katsojan inspiroimista ja oikeesti tekemistä.

What is redukt_duo?
Founded in 2023, redukt_ was born out of the need to create unprecedented performances – surprising, structurally innovative, and the kind we ourselves would want to see. We have collaborated since 2015, developing a shared artistic practice that we call doing for real.
What is doing for real?
Doing for real is a artistic practice in which the stage work and its performance space are approached exactly as they are – for real. It seeks to dismantle traditional assumptions and conventions of theater, both in terms of space and authorship.
As a metaphor, we can use the idea of a glass of water on a table. We do not pretend that the water is juice or the table is a desert. Instead, we seek a way to frame and contextualize it so that a glass of water on a table – as it is – becomes meaningful.
Theater as an event and a space already contains numerous assumptions about what a performance should look like or be. A red curtain, Shakespearean texts, star performers, and a certain kind of audience interpretation are all part of these assumptions. The roles of theater makers – director, actor, musician – are also full of preconceptions. Instead, we ask: What is actually happening? Who is making this happen? And what we want to do for real?
The Performance Space and the Working Group
In our artistic process, the performance space and the working group are the starting points. We ask: Where is the stage? How does it feel? What does it sound like? What kind of lighting does it have? What are the seats like? Where does the audience sit?
Within the working group, we strive to discover each individual's artistic desire and role: What is my dream as an artist? What does it take to achieve it? How does my role within the group take shape?
Doing for real carries an ethical aspiration: Every member of the working group, including the entire staff, should be recognized as individuals and acknowledged for how they can participate in the creation process within the given conditions.
The Artistic Process
Our work is process-oriented, with the entire working group influencing the content of the performance. The process unfolds in three stages:
- Preliminary Planning – We define the artistic and production framework: Is there a script? What kind of set design? Who is in the working group?
- Experimentation – We explore the space and each other, test different ideas, play, and get inspired without the pressure to produce immediate results.
- Rehearsal Phase – We commit to the materials we have discovered and refine them into a final performance.
Our theater and art is about thinking, experimenting, inspiring audience and doing for real.
